Your First 3D Print: Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Unbox and assemble

Most modern printers arrive 90% assembled. Follow the manufacturer's quick-start guide exactly — don't skip steps. Tighten all visible bolts (they loosen during shipping). Connect the power cable, filament sensor, and screen cable. Level or calibrate the bed using the printer's built-in wizard.

Step 2: Load filament

Start with PLA — it's the most forgiving material. Heat the nozzle to 200°C (your printer's UI will guide you), insert the filament into the extruder, and push until it starts flowing from the nozzle. Wait until the color is consistent (old filament from the factory may be a different color).

Step 3: Download a test model

Don't design your own model first. Download a proven test file: the benchy (3D boat) is the universal test print. You can find it on MakerWorld, Printables, or Thingiverse. Use the recommended settings from the slicer profile for your printer and PLA.

Step 4: Slice and print

Install your printer's recommended slicer (Bambu Studio for Bambu Lab, OrcaSlicer or Cura for others). Import the model, select your printer and PLA profile, and slice. The slicer will show estimated time and material usage. Send it to the printer via WiFi, USB, or SD card. Watch the first few layers — if the first layer looks smooth and consistent, you're golden.

Step 5: Watch the first layer

The first layer is the foundation of every print. It should be smooth, consistent, and well-adhered to the bed. If it's too high (filament not sticking, gaps between lines), lower the Z offset. If it's too low (filament is squished flat, rough texture), raise it. Most printers let you adjust Z offset in real-time during printing.

Step 6: Remove and inspect

Wait for the bed to cool (PLA releases easily from a cool PEI sheet). Remove the print. Inspect for layer consistency, adhesion quality, and stringing. Your first print won't be perfect — that's normal. The second one will be better.
